WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a Martial Art system that emphasizes position and leverage to neutralize, control, and if necessary submit an aggressor. Striking, although applicable, is usually passed over in favor of chokes and submission holds (joint locks). This approach allows a person to effectively defend themself without the need to inflict excessive damage to their assailant
and is the main reason why Jiu-Jitsu is often referred to as “The Gentle Art”.

The Gracie Family of Brazil and later the Machados (cousins of the Gracies) brought their unique fighting system to the United States in the late 1980's and early 1990's. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighting system received worldwide recognition when Royce Gracie defeated several significantly larger imposing mixed martial artists in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
fighting system soon became the most sought after form of martial arts. Many highly skilled martial artists realized the value of BJJ and sought out dojos to learn the secrets of this unique form of fighting.

BJJ is a very effective way to counter an attacker. It teaches techniques to subdue or disable. It conditions the reflexes to react instinctively if attacked. Best of all, no weapons are needed. So BJJ can be used whenever and wherever necessary.

The time invested will return a lifetime of benefits.
